Starla

I’d never been to a clan gathering of more than ten people.

My clan was small, an offshoot of an offshoot that managed to mostly have daughters. Although there were more forward-thinking clans on the faraway coasts, in the middle of the country, clans couldn’t survive without sons. The more, the better.

As a kid, we still had other elders, men my dad convinced to join because they had no pack of their own. Time passed, and the aging population vanished. Despite all of his hard work, it was now just the four of us.

I knew Rome was from a more established pack. It wasn’t hard to see how connected he was to his shifter roots, but I wasn’t sure what to expect. Every time someone described a pack meeting, I pictured maybe twenty to thirty people shoved inside a community center talking about their lives.

This was nothing like that.

The afternoon sun was bright and steady as it poured through the car’s sunroof. Lying back in the passenger seat, I had my eyes shut and was picturing how it felt when we were on the yacht in The Maldives. I’d give everything if it meant I could be back there with him.

The turn signal clicked, and as the car turned, I could hear the concrete road give way to gravel and dirt. I opened my eyes and tried to take in where we were. The road’s debris clouded out around us like a smoke screen, but beyond it was some of the lushest greenery I’d ever seen.

“Is this where you grew up?” I sat up for a better view. There was so much more I needed to know about him. This trip was the perfect chance.

“No,” he answered. “My parents’ house is about fifty miles from here. This is one of our more recent areas. We just like to switch it up for pack meetings.”

Fifty miles?

“That makes sense,” I nodded, but I couldn’t imagine having that much land. How much was there?

“Is it all communally owned?”

“To a degree. We can all vote on what we want to build or what to avoid building. But in the end, the only person who has the final say is my dad. He can pass or stop any project.”

“So, your dad’s the leader of all of this land?”

He nodded, and my jaw dropped. I knew he had money, but I didn’t realize it was because he was literal royalty. “Aren’t you the oldest son?”

“Yes,” he glanced over as he answered. It was clear he wasn’t sure how I was going to react. He’d said he was the oldest child before, but it never clicked that he was the main heir. One day, he was going to gain all of this land.

“Wait, what will you do about your business when you take over?”

“I’ll run both,” he shrugged. “I could sell it, but I’ve worked too hard to let it go like that.”

I nodded and sat back against my chair, staring up through the cloudy sunroof.

“What about your
